I spent a year in the notoriously rainy Pas-de-Calais region of France teaching English to school kids. I lived on the grounds of an old chateau in a tiny village, and walked 10km a day to-and- from the town where I taught. It rained nearly everyday, but the people there were full of sunshine and I made lifelong connections with the incredibly citizens of this place.
Steve Birek's long road to Rumie began when he started teaching English in France. After a year abroad, he returned to Toronto to teach English as a Second Language to adult international students. From there, he became a training instructor for ESL teachers, and a program administrator at a local ESL school, while studying Learning Design at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and eLearning Development at Seneca College.
Steve found himself at a fork in the road when COVID-19 brought unprecedented times. He decided to join Rumie as a volunteer learning designer. After a few months of creating Bytes, he joined Rumie staff as a Virtual Facilitator. He enjoys sharing the Byte creation experience with Rumie's corporate partners. Steve believes strongly in free education for all people and is excited to contribute to Rumie's mission.
