OUR STORY

From books to Bytes

Since 2013, Rumie has pioneered a movement to promote the importance of equal access to mobile-first digital learning experiences.

Meet the founder

Tariq Fancy left a job on Wall Street to start Rumie with his own savings. Learn what inspired him to change his career and build social purpose through his work.

Rumie's founder, Tariq Fancy

After seeing how my uncle, Anjam, was denied an education due to a disability, I became passionate about understanding how underrepresented communities experience barriers to learning.

I found that 60% of adolescents faced barriers to quality learning — and 54% of adults needed skills training to adapt to a changing job market.

When I realized my uncle’s barriers to learning represented a global education crisis, I committed to finding out exactly what it takes to provide quality learning resources for all.

263 million children and youth do not have access to formal education.

Becoming pioneers in mobile-first learning

Rumie launched with the mission to get a digital learning device in the hands of every single child and youth. In fact, we were one of the first organizations to champion the significant role of personal devices in the fight to protect and promote education in a changing world.

Since we launched in 2013, mobile infrastructure has rapidly expanded to 6.5 billion smartphones worldwide . Our original dream was becoming a reality, but attention-grabbing social media feeds were beginning to deflate the promise of an information age.

Bytes are born

In response, we doubled-down on microlearning innovation. Our new goal was to create an algorithm that feeds modern learners relevant microlearning articles. We now affectionately call these articles, Bytes. Today over 1.9+ million active learners enjoy our meaningful alternative to social media.

Microlearning is 20% more effective at learner retention than traditional learning models.

Along with our talented network of nonprofit and corporate partners, I’m proud to say Rumie is pioneering innovative microlearning programs that remove the barriers to quality learning. How do we do it? We train partners and volunteers on our suite of microlearning products, making it easy to create, host, and distribute digital learning content.
